Linking land with water: challenges and opportunities for land conservation in the Great Lakes watershed.

The quality of life for people living in the Great Lakes watershed is highly dependent on conserving and protecting streams and wetlands, clean drinking water, productive agricultural land, and natural areas. The future of this quality of life continues to be threatened by irresponsible development, habitat fragmentation, wetlands loss, and industrial pollution. Time is of the essence, and land conservation plays a critical role in protecting these essential natural resources. This presentation will examine opportunities for individual and collective action to promote land conservation in the watershed. With a new expansion of the federal conservation tax incentive for conservation easement donations, increasing efforts to promote strategic conservation in the region, and public opinion showing pride and concern in caring for the Great Lakes, the time is ripe for ensuring a sustainable watershed for future generations.
